LOXLEY, WARWICKSHIRE
AND
ROBIN OF LOXLEY

Loxley Village Green Loxley is a small village on a hill, 5 miles from Stratford-upon-Avon, and overlooking the Avon Valley.

This picture shows the village green, and part of the view beyond, looking out across the Avon Valley.

This is St Nicholas's Church, Loxley, which lies down the hill on its Northern side.

This site has been a place of worship since the 8th century. Some stonework in the church may be Saxon. The tower is 13th century. Loxley Church is normally closed to the public.

The village green and the main part of the village lies up the hill, just to the left of the church in the picture.

Loxley Church
Loxley was the birthplace and home of the original Robin Hood, Robin of Loxley. The Robin Hood legend as it comes down to us is the fusion of 3 separate stories. The book Robin Hood The Man Behind The Myth claims that the original Robin Hood was Robert Fitz Odo who was born in Loxley, Warwickshire, lived here in Loxley Manor, and whose gravestone now lies in the churchyard of Loxley Church (shown at right).

Robin Hoods Gravestone

There are good views from each side of Loxley Hill. This picture below is taken from the North-East side and shows the view looking up the Avon Valley.

View Up the Avon Valley from Loxley

View Up the Avon Valley from Loxley In the picture above (and reproduced at the left), various church spires projecting above the trees show the locations of villages and towns. Easily visible in the picture above are churches at Hampton Lucy (H), Charlecote (C), and St Mary's Warwick (W).

Stratford from Loxley The best views are obtained from about half a mile out of the village on a bend where the road reaches its highest point. There is a pull-in and parking place just here.

From this point there are good views over Ilmington, and towards the Cotswolds, and over Stratford, Warwick and towards Coventry. This is the view looking over Stratford-Upon-Avon. The church spire in the centre of the picture is Holy Trinity Stratford.
