HEART-OF-ENGLAND
The bench and chestnut tree typify the purposes of a green - for older people to pass the day, and for children to play. A few villages have a war memorial on their green.

VILLAGE GREENSMany villages have a village green. A village green is often triangular. This happens when 3 principal roads meet in a village, which is often the case. There is often a large tree on the green, usually a chestnut (not an oak). And there is a bench. Nearby there is usually a shop, a church, and a pub.
