COUGHTON COURT

Coughton Court

Coughton Court has been the home of the Throckmorton faimly for 600 years. The Throckmorton family have always been staunchly Roman Catholic and played important part in British history through the Reformation. In 1583 The Throckmorton Plot tried to put Mary Queen of Scots on the throne in place of Elizabeth. In 1605 the Gunowder Plot, to blow up Parliament, was organised from here. The house has several priest holes, in which catholic priests were at times hidden. The oldest part of the buiding, the central gatehouse dates from probably before 1530.

These pictures show the more impressive rear, enclosing a courtyard of roses. This courtyard was originally enclosed on 4 sides, but the East wing was destroyed by a protestant mob in 1688, and now opens onto gardens. Coughton Court
Coughton CourtCoughton's "Walled Garden" is very impressive. The Walled Garden is not an original feature, dating only from 1996, but is well in keeping with the house. The Walled Garden is a series of gardens. The most unusual and impressive part is a large square, completely packed with herbaceous plants. Narrow gravel paths with arches of old roses and clematis, run across the area.

Coughton CourtThe garden is best seen in mid-June when the roses are at their best.

The walled garden has a very olde-worlde feel, and it may suprise the visitor to learn that the garden was built within the past 10 years.
